Critmiss Day 2: Works in Progress (Well, Kind Of.)

Alright, future Sky popping in to say that this post was supposed to be posted yesterday, December 14th, 2020 but, I accidentally hit save as draft instead of publishing last night. I’m sorry, So today, December 15th, you’ll just get two posts from me instead!

Today, I’d like to take a little bit of time out of my day to talk to you about my current WIPs.

That’s right, you heard me. As of right now, I am working on more than one project which, I understand is something that not a lot of people do. Some people, editors, and publishers if you’re publishing traditionally, want you to pick only one project and focus on just that one thing. Sometimes for a year or sometimes longer. It just depends on the person, the editor, and of course the publisher.

That being said, I kind of feel the need to mention that I am someone who has always self-published through Amazon’s KDP before I chose to take a small step back, pull my books off the market, and rebrand myself under my own name. Before that, I was writing for a little while under a penname, and while that was a lot of fun, and it gave me a little bit more freedom and anonymity, I just felt like this was the best thing to do for me personally.

Now, I think pennames are great. They’re good for people who are both just starting out, and people who have been at writing for a long time. One of my favorite writers who, unfortunately, lost her battle with cancer this year, Rachel Caine, author of The Morganville Vampires wrote under a penname. So, if like me, you enjoy writing and you write, or have written under a penname, I want you to know that I think that’s great. I think it’s really cool. So, whether your reasons stem from the fact that you like to write erotica and you don’t want your friends and family to know about it, or writing is a hobby for you, and you’d like to keep your “personal life” and your “writing life” separate, that’s great too. Even if you’re writing under a penname to distance yourself from your day job and your work life, even that is pretty cool to me.

Currently, I have three major projects that I’m working on.

  1. Something Wicked- This right here is something of a pet project of mine, born originally from a writing prompt that I originally found on Pinterest in 2014. In fact, I still have that same pin in my boards, and every time I look back at it, I still feel the same rush of excitement and inspiration as I did the very first time I saw it.

The story itself centers around a female main character (Winnie) whose best friend (Kohl) goes missing from his own backyard while playing a game of hide and seek. She spends the next 20-years trying to get someone to listen to her when she says that she watched him get abducted and help her find him. Winnie feels as though its her fault that Kohl was abducted in the first place, having gotten mad at him when she thought that he’d been cheating during their game. The story is an urban fantasy/sci-fi crossover with a lot of strong worldbuilding elements that I think will take the readers on a deep dive into this new world that I’m trying to create.

I’m hoping that this one will turn into a three book series if at all possible.

  • Bloom- now, this project is something that I haven’t really spoken about publicly or to many people, and if I have, I haven’t admitted that it’s almost done, ready, and about to be published through KDP because, traditionally publishing my works isn’t a route that I really want to go down in this time in my life.

In part, I feel like that’s because when I was talking to an editor, which I briefly mentioned back in my “Inspiration in 2020” post, which I can link for you if you want to go check that out, about how I spent some time on the phone with an editor from Chicago speaking about my writing. He was really nice but, I feel like it took a little bit of the magic away from writing for me for a little while, and I’m just now starting to get that back.

But you’ve heard it here first, within the first couple weeks of the new year, I will be releasing a poetry collection called Bloom! I’ll also be releasing some more information about that, and some samples from Bloom soon!

  • Inner Demons- like Something Wicked, right now I’m viewing Inner Demons as a single novel, or perhaps even a series. More often than not when I sit down to work on this project, I get so many “brilliant” ideas for characters, their backstories, their lives, and everything else.

I put so much time and effort into the worldbuilding of Inner Demons, not only because its something I enjoy doing but because, I would love to put together a world that’s “real” enough for my future readers to get lost in. Some of my favorite books have in-depth worlds in which they’re centered in, and I think it brings a whole new aspect to storytelling.

The main character is a witch named Salem whose mother died when she was young, and so she was brought up by her coven’s leader, one of her mother’s best friends. But when word comes out that her mother’s friend may have been the cause of her death, there’s discourse in the coven, and Salem’s world changes for the best and the worst.

I don’t really know what genera I want to call Inner Demons just yet, due to all of the magic and worldbuilding however, I’m leaning more strongly towards adventure/fantasy than anything else but, the story isn’t finished yet so I can’t really know for sure!

So there you have it, those are my three most important projects that I have going on right now. What do you think? Would you like to read any of these? Do you have questions? Comments? Concerns? Let me know, I’d love to get some feedback from you.
