Folklore Wednesday #1: Faeries

Forget absolutely everything you know about Tinkerbell.  Do you find yourself perilously running from the Fae?  Have you promised them your first-born child in exchange for love, money, power?  Or maybe there was some straw that needed to be spun into gold so the King wouldn’t behead you in the morning?  Well, I may have just the thing for you!  Here are some surefire ways to protect you and your loved ones from the Faeries.

Now, before we jump right on in, let’s start with some of the basics first.  In this installment, I’ll be giving you some basics as to what to do and not to do when encountering the Fae.

  • First and foremost, never, under any circumstances tell or reveal your true name to a member of the Fae.  It is believed that should they ever learn your true name- be it from you, or whether they come to learn it on their own- they will forever hold power over you.  So, it is always wise to give a false name if you must but, it’s always better to give none at all.
  • Secondly, should you find yourself in a Faerie Mound, or the Land of Faeries, it is imperative that you eat and drink nothing.  The same rule applies if a Faerie offers you something to eat or drink, even in the Mortal Realm.  To do so is to risk falling under their power and barring yourself from the Mortal Realm forever.  That being said, if you must and have no choice, salt may help to break any enchantment placed upon the food.
  • Now, this one may not seem so obvious as the other two but, trust me on this one, you should never thank the Faerie Folk.  You see, to thank the Fae in any and all capacities is to admit that a debt is owed.  They may then ask anything of you in return, lest ye be forsworn, in which case your life is then forfeited to the Old Laws.  A good way around this is to acknowledge that they’ve done something for you but, without saying that you owe them anything.  A good alternative is to say that you appreciate their help, or whatever it is they’ve done for you.
  • Trust no gifts.  In the same way that food is a big no-no, the same goes for gifts given to you by the Fae.  Faeries are devious and tricksy things, so you must always be wary, especially when it comes to accepting something, they’ve given you.  Their gifts, while often beautiful, thoughtful, terrible, and at times deadly, can most often be accompanied by some unwanted consequences some of which are irreversible.  In the case that you need to destroy a gift given to you by the Fae, salt and fire can be effective.
  • Finally, and I cannot stress this enough, be polite.  Now, I know that sounds strange, doesn’t it?  Be polite to these ages old creatures that seem to want nothing more than to hurt you?  Well, there’s a reason behind it.  Most, if not all Fae are very, very old.  So, it is imperative to always try to speak without causing offense.  Any and all curses placed upon you may follow your family long, long after you yourself are gone.

That’s all for this segment, however, in the next one we’ll be getting more in-depth about what you can do to protect your friends, family, home, and livestock from being terrorized by Faeries.  Thank you, and tune in again for the next installment of Forget Everything You Know About Tinkerbell.
