Surgery Update: #1

Most of you already know that I had surgery on Wednesday, September 14th, and I’d originally hoped to update you all on my condition and whatnot yesterday but, due to some rather aggravating events that just didn’t happen.

I arrived at Rush, Oak Park at 7:30am on Wednesday with Angel, and my anxiety was already pretty high. Little did I know, it was going to get higher, and higher, and higher. My nurses were fantastic, first off, so none of the events to come can be blamed on them in the least. I was happy to see Donna again, and I was surprised she recognized me. She’d been with me through every nerve block and surgery so far, and I could tell she was not happy to see me back in one of the waiting bays. (I too, was unhappy.)

My IV was done upstairs because the Same Day Surgery (SOS) nurses didn’t want to turn me into a pin cushion. And when I went upstairs, they showered me in warm blankies- which I appreciated a lot more than they know. I am never one to turn down blankies, or pillows, or stuffies. I want endless comfort objects, always.

But even I wasn’t prepared for what was to come. I knew when I woke up from the anesthetic, after the procedure that something was wrong. The left side of my body felt incredibly heavy, like there were 80lb bowling balls tied to my leg and my arm. The left side of my face also felt funny, and strange, and numb. I immediately told the recovery nurses, who sent me the pain fellow, who told me that it was “probably just the way I was positioned on the table” and that I would feel better tomorrow. (Yesterday.)

But when I woke up yesterday, I didn’t feel better. Everything still felt numb, and heavy, and off. I cannot move the left side of my face easily. It feels numb. If I smile, only the right half of my face moves. Angel brought me to the ER yesterday, where they did all kinds of tests to check for strokes, surgery complications, and whatnot, and I’ve been diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy.

            They prescribed me steroids.

I’ve had a constant headache since waking up, and every time I take my medications, I end up vomiting, which is starting to drive me crazy. I don’t know what to do about it. I’ve posted a bit on Facebook and on TikTok about it, and I might continue to post more there instead of on here, simply because typing isn’t that easy because of how heavy my arm feels but, I will keep you updated when I can. I’ll leave you my linktree in case you want to check in on me from other platforms. As for now, Angel and I are going to start watching a Lord of the Rings marathon so we can watch the new series on Amazon Prime.
