Today marked the true start of the 2025 garden season, and we are exhausted- truthfully, maybe some a little more than others. The Yard Yeti (my little brother BJ, if you consider 23 little) was a huge help, tilling all of the garden boxes, while The Moss Maiden (my partner, whose love of all things green is rivaled only by her obsession with mushrooms and cozy gaming) and I planted our zucchini, sweetheart tomatoes, roma tomatoes, slicer tomatoes, sweet red bell peppers, sweet yellow bell peppers, and sweet green bell peppers.
(Truth be told- I did have to hang out inside for a bit while I waited on an AT&T tech to come and fix my phone screen, so the two of them did a majority of the tail end of the work. -Gotta give credit where credit is due.)
We hit a bit of a snag when it came to the cucumber plants though- our old trellis finally gave up the ghost. No real surprise there, considering it was originally bought by my grandmother who knows how many years ago, and has been supporting our plants since our very first year of gardening, as well as many years of her own gardening before us. Until we can get it replaced, those cucumbers are staying put in their starter pots, but that didn’t stop us from putting the jalapeños in and plotting out where the cantaloupes and watermelons will live this year.
(Future Sky popping in to say that Yard Yeti wound up digging up the half-assed melon pit from last year- because we believe in realness here on this blog- and made it much nicer. He boxed out the edges properly, added extra dirt, and they went right back in where they used to be. It’s just a lot better of a space than last year; the melons were… lets say, unexpected, although not unwanted. So, we needed to scramble a bit, to find them a proper place in mid-June when it was already hot as heck, and didn’t have the… let’s go with luxury, of letting them sit in their cups for an extra two days the way we did with the cucumber plants.)
Speaking of unexpected garden additions while we’re on that topic, this year we’re adding two beautiful raspberry bushes! Alrighty, so, right now they just look like cute little twigs with leaves, and they’re hardly ankle height but, they’ll get there… My grandmother always used to say that dynamite comes in small packages. They’ll go in tomorrow, along with the rest of our plants. But for today, I’m calling it. We’re beyond exhausted.
Although, I do have to take a moment to sing Luna’s praises. Yesterday, she accompanied me to her very first ever doctor’s appointment… at the allergy office. To be respectful of other patients’ sensitivities, she stayed back in the waiting room with The Moss Maiden. With my permission, she even got to meet and get some well-deserved pets from a few of my favorite office staff, including Nurse Julie, Stephen, and Maureen, the P.A., who have been hearing about her since I first adopted her last year. They all had such good things to say about her quiet, calm, well-behaved demeanor, and The Moss Maiden even took the opportunity to educate another patient about service dogs and the crucial role they play in the lives of their handlers. I couldn’t have been prouder. -of both of my girls, if I didn’t make that clear.
(Hey- future Sky, again, popping in because I did get a couple private messages through social media and comments on this post that I have deleted due to hateful words that I’d prefer we not use here. Just to address those real quick- maybe I’ll make a full post in the future, I’m unsure.
- Yes, Luna’s service dog gear does say “Service Dog: No touching, Interacting, Kissy Noises.”
- Each Handler is Different. Some hold their dogs to extremely strict rules, and will not even allow their own children to pet their service dog while they are in “work mode” -I simply bring this up because there are creators I follow who have discussed this.
However, Luna is my service dog, okay? Me allowing her to say hello to some of my favorite staff and trusted medical professionals, of which whom she may or may not be interacting with in the future is my choice. It is my prerogative. This does not make her any less valid of a service animal. She said hello to Nurse Julie while I was sitting right there with my partner, who could’ve easily helped in case of an emergency, and she was checking back in with me every step of the way. When Maureen the P.A. went out to visit, with my permission, again- I was standing at the desk, talking to the receptionists, making an appointment. When Steven went to visit her, I was right there, and again, she kept checking back up and in with me.
That’s legitimately all I can say about this for now- if you’d like to know, or see more about Luna, or my chronic illness content, feel free to check out my TikTok, also called The Crippled Cryptid, where I’ve posted videos talking about service dogs, her doing DPT, and other tasks, and training for her tasks. This “fake spotting” is getting a little ridiculous.)

Oh, and while the Yard Yeti might not eat a lot of veggies (unless I sneak them into his food, or they come in the form of my homemade pizza and pasta sauce), he did benefit when I whipped up a batch of King’s Hawaiian baked ham and cheese sandwiches as a post-yardwork treat. Because who doesn’t like being treated to lunch after hard work, right?
Alright cryptid crew, I think it’s time I haunt my bed for a while. Garden goblins gotta rest up, too.
🖤🌱👻
Stay safe, and stay spooky.
