Hello again, my foggy friends,
Today is Friday the 13th! I know it’s not one of my usual posting days, but since this spooky date doesn’t come around all that often, I couldn’t resist making an exception. It’s one of those fun, curious days steeped in superstition- and honestly, what better place to chat about it than right here?
Friday the 13th is often seen as unlucky, thanks to a mix of religious beliefs, mythology, and cultural superstitions. The number 13 itself is considered inauspicious in many cultures, while Friday has long been linked to bad luck- despite the fact that most working folks I know live for Friday! When you combine the two, it’s seen as a double whammy of misfortune.
Biblically, the number 13 gets a bad rap because Judas Iscariot- the 13th guest at The Last Supper- betrayed Jesus. The crucifixion happening on a Friday only added to Friday’s unlucky reputation. Many also point to Friday as the day of Adam and Eve’s fall, Cain’s murder of Abel, and the destruction of the Temple of Solomon.
In Norse mythology (a personal favorite of mine), the mischievous god Loki- the uninvited 13th guest- crashed a feast in Valhalla, bringing chaos and tragedy. (And no, Marvel, I don’t mean your Loki!) We can’t forget the mass arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13th, 1307- another historical link to the superstition.
There are plenty more reasons, but at the end of the day, it boils down to culture, religion, and a sprinkle of superstition. As for me? Friday the 13th has always been more of an anomaly than an omen. I don’t tend to see something as bad just because tradition says so- black cats included! (Someday I’m going to have one, and yes, he’ll probably be named Thackery Binx. Thanks, Hocus Pocus.)
In fact, growing up I was always told that Friday the 13th was “lucky” for the Lambert family. While the date itself- June 13th, is not something to celebrate, with my grandfather Richard Lambert having passed away due to cancer on June 13th, 2005 I’m still choosing to try and look on the brighter side of things.
So tonight, we’re embracing the spooky fun. The Moss Maiden and I (and maybe the Yard Yeti, if he’s up for it) have a special horror movie night planned, complete with a feast:
- Homemade sweet and sour chicken
- Mongolian beef
- Veggie fried rice
- Sweet and sticky pork belly (on the Blackstone, of course)
- Egg rolls- pork for me, veggie for the Moss Maiden
- Pork soup dumplings (thank you, Costco)
- Char siu pork buns
We’re planning to cozy up on the couch and dive into The Woman in the Yard (I’ve heard great things!) or maybe throw it back with an old-school Friday the 13th movie. We’ll see how brave we’re feeling!
And don’t worry- Luna’s not being left out. She’s getting a special dinner too: a hearty dog soup made from the broth of our rib prep, loaded with veggies and turkey. It’s our way of making sure nothing goes to waste while giving our pups a nutritious, tasty meal. (Bear’s joints are especially grateful for the extra love- shout out to Cosequin!)
Whatever your plans are today, whether you’re superstitious or not, I hope you find a little magic in the moment. Friday the 13th doesn’t have to be scary- it can be a celebration of curiosity, history, and yes, really good food.
Until next time,
Sky, The Crippled Cryptid
