“Healing is strange. And wonderful.” 🐾

Welcome to the Lunatic Café

Welcome to The Crippled Cryptid.

Disability.

Chronic illness.

Service dogs.

Survival without the performance.

If you’re new here…

Hi.

I’m Luna Bean.

Medical Alert Service Dog.

Certified Good Girl.

Professional Nervous System Supervisor.

Mama’s body likes to improvise.

My job is to notice before it steals the spotlight.

I alert to migraines.

Seizures.

Heart rate spikes.

Muscle spasms.

And any vibes that make my ears do the thing.

I interrupt spirals.

I perform Deep Pressure Therapy with the seriousness of ancient dog magic.

Especially after very important back surgery.

I’m also learning to retrieve things Mama drops whenever her hands decide they’d rather not participate in today’s activities.

Some people call me a dog.

Some people call me medical equipment.

Mama calls me freedom.

Personally…

I think Mama is my sidekick.

She says I have “Main Character Energy.”

Whatever the fluff that means…

But it sounds correct.

Most days around here move slowly.

Some happen entirely from Bed Jail™.

That’s okay.

Bed Jail has rules.

Rule Number One:

If Mama moves…

I also move.

It is the law.

There’s also Mama #2.

Professional belly-rub distributor.

Treat provider.

Official sweater stylist during the winter months.

Bandana curator the rest of the year.

She belongs to both of us.

Then there’s the Yard Yeti.

My best friend.

Mama’s younger brother.

Still somehow the tallest creature in the house.

He throws my ball approximately seventeen miles.

I have not yet reached the end.

He also yells “LULUS!” every single time he sees me.

Which naturally deserves maximum tail wags.

Maximum borks.

Maximum boings.

I love him very much.

Our Pack keeps growing.

Some have two legs.

Some have four.

Some came into our lives recently.

Some have been here forever.

Every single one belongs.

This is a place for chronic illness without shame.

Disability without performance.

Care without conditions.

And yes…

There will absolutely be dog fur.

If you’ve been here before…

Welcome home.

If you’re new…

You’re safe here.

Welcome to the Lunatic Café.

Today’s special?

Friday Takeover.

🌞 Hydration Check

Hi, hello!

Sit.

Stay.

Good human.

Before we do anything else…

It’s been very hot here in Illinois.

Which means this is your official hydration check.

Please don’t be like Mama.

Mama likes to insist coffee counts as hydration because “it has water in it.”

She occasionally adds Buoy drops and becomes even more convinced she’s correct.

She’s… not entirely wrong.

But she’s also not entirely right.

Bodies need water.

Bodies need food.

Especially when they’re healing.

Especially when it’s hot outside.

So go drink something.

Eat something.

Be kind to the body that’s carrying you through today.

💜 Mama Note: Luna would like everyone to know she supervised the writing of this section while aggressively judging my coffee cup.

🩹 Operation: Keep Mama Alive

Last week…

Mama had surgery.

Since then, we’ve all been working very hard.

Mama #2 makes sure she takes her medicine.

The Yard Yeti makes sure she doesn’t overdo things.

Sometimes…

She still tries.

Even after both of them give her The Look™.

I also have a look.

Mine comes with ears.

Mama sleeps differently now.

Sometimes she makes tiny noises when she moves.

Sometimes she breathes differently.

Sometimes I can tell she’s hurting before she says anything.

So, I check.

Every single time.

Healing takes time.

Making sure Mama keeps healing?

That’s important work.

💜 Mama Note: She isn’t exaggerating. I can’t shift positions without her lifting her head to check on me. If I sound uncomfortable, she’s immediately there.

🐻 Missing Bear

Something else has changed around here.

Life has been quieter.

Not sleepy quiet.

Different quiet.

Bear and I used to patrol the fence together.

We chased rabbits away from Mama’s vegetables.

We took car rides.

Shared pup cups.

Went on adventures.

He taught me things.

Mama says I reminded him how to be young again.

Sometimes…

I still glance toward the fence expecting another set of paws beside mine.

Habits made from love take a long time to fade.

Mama.

Mama #2.

The Yard Yeti.

They all notice it too.

There isn’t anyone who could ever replace Bear.

No one is supposed to.

Love doesn’t work that way.

But sometimes…

Our hearts make room without letting anyone go.

💜 Mama Note: Bear will always be part of this family. Loving another dog doesn’t mean loving him less. It just means love kept growing.

🥔 The Potato™ Has Landed

Well…

The countdown didn’t last nearly as long as we thought.

The Potato™ came home on Wednesday.

It was a surprise.

The very best kind.

One minute everyone thought we still had days left.

The next…

My little brother was HOME.

He’s tiny.

He’s clumsy.

His feet don’t always seem to know where they’re going yet.

I’m already teaching him important family traditions.

Like following Mama.

Watching the humans.

And when Mama says…

“Go get your cow.”

I know exactly who she means.

I go find my baby brother.

He still doesn’t like sleeping by himself.

Honestly…

I understand.

So, every night…

He curls up in bed with all of us.

Sometimes against Mama.

Sometimes against Mama #2.

Usually…

Against me.

He’s warm.

He wiggles.

He snores just a little.

I think he’s going to fit in just fine.

💜 Mama Note: Watching Luna become a big sister has been one of the sweetest things I’ve ever witnessed. She’s gentle, patient, and already checks on him constantly. I knew she’d love him. I didn’t realize she’d mother him.

🎾 Puppy Adventures Are Officially Underway

Turns out…

Mama and Mama #2 were right.

The toy basket is already fuller.

The house is definitely louder.

There are tiny puppy feet everywhere.

Healing still happens here.

Just…

With a lot more zoomies.

One adventure we’re especially excited for?

Taking The Potato™ to Reese’s Barkery.

Every puppy deserves their first bakery visit.

And I intend to personally introduce him to all the best snacks.

🌫️ A Little Love for Our Neighbors

Before I go…

Mama wanted me to say something important.

The smoke from the Canadian wildfires has drifted all the way to Illinois.

The air has been heavy.

The sky has looked different.

We’re thinking especially about everyone in Canada whose homes, communities, and lives have been affected.

Please take care of yourselves.

Drink water.

Wear a mask if the air isn’t safe.

Rest whenever you can.

We’re sending you so much love.

💜 Mama Note: Smoke travels across borders, but compassion does too. If you’re living through the fires or the smoke, we’re holding space for you.

🌿 Life Keeps Moving

Healing is funny like that.

One day you’re counting pills.

The next you’re counting puppy naps.

Mama still has allergy shots.

Still has physical restrictions.

Still has to remind herself that healing isn’t a race.

But now…

She also laughs because there’s a puppy asleep upside down beside her service dog.

We celebrated Wednesday the best way we knew how.

Ribs.

Cheesy potatoes with bacon.

A full house.

A fuller heart.

I think that’s worth celebrating.

Until Next Friday…

Healing is strange.

Last week…

Healing looked like medications.

Bed Jail™.

Careful steps.

This week…

Healing looks like puppy breath.

Tiny snores.

Happy tears.

And a house that’s finally noisy again.

Sometimes healing arrives wearing a bandage.

Sometimes…

It arrives with floppy ears.

If something here felt familiar…

You’re not alone.

If today asked too much of you…

It’s okay to rest.

You don’t have to earn care.

You don’t have to prove your pain.

You don’t have to be productive to deserve kindness.

I’ll be right here.

Watching Mama breathe.

Watching over my little brother.

Making sure everyone stays together.

That’s what family does.

If you’d ever like to spoil me…

Mama made me an Amazon Wishlist. (Some things are for Potato too!)

No expectations.

Ever.

Some people send flowers.

Some people send chew toys.

I happen to appreciate both.

Until next Friday…

🐾 Love,

💜 Mama’s Final Note:

Recovery is still slow.

My back still reminds me every day that surgery happened.

But healing isn’t only measured in incision checks, medications, or how far I can walk.

Sometimes it’s measured by the first time your service dog gently curls around a puppy like she’s always been his big sister.

Sometimes it’s celebrating an ordinary Wednesday with ribs, cheesy potatoes loaded with bacon, and the feeling that your family just became whole again.

Thank you for being here through every chapter. Through Bear, through surgery, through Bed Jail™, and now through The Potato™’s first days home.

Our story keeps changing.

I’m really grateful you’re still reading it.

With love,

Mama 💜
