Welcome to The Crippled Cryptid
If you’re new here, hi. I’m Sky.
Professional cryptid.
Unwilling amateur cyborg.
Medically complex enough to make my chart a jump scare. I cope with sarcasm, snacks, and an unreasonable amount of coffee.
Summer does not reset that. But it gives a little more freedom.
I still spend time in Bed Jail™, but I’m never alone thanks to Luna, my medical alert service dog. Guardian. Enforcer. OSHA violation prevention officer. Year-round.
There’s also M&M. My Player 2. My soft place to land. She makes meatballs. She gives headpats. She watches shows with me. She keeps me tethered to the world when my body tries to float away.
This space is for:
• Chronic illness without inspiration porn
• Disability without apologies
• Love without pretending it’s always neat or easy
(But it always comes with at least a little dog hair.)
Welcome back if you’ve been here before.
If you’re new, you’ll find your footing.
Welcome to the Lunatic Café.
On Today’s Menu: Our Summer Routine
Summer is not a reset button. It’s a careful choreography of sun, shade, water, and pacing. The dog door is open more. The deck is hot. The garden grows. The AC is definitely on. Luna still works, still rests, still teaches me about presence and patience.
Morning: Snuggles, Always First
Wake up.
Luna realizes we’re conscious.
She climbs onto my chest like gravity is optional.
She licks my face.
She presses her weight into me.
Some routines never change, no matter the season. Morning snuggles are one of them.
Garden Walk, Morning Zoomies
After snuggles, we head down to the garden.
Quick harvest, checking what needs work, maybe making a list.
Luna gets potty time and a short play session with her ball to burn off energy before the heat of the day.
Heat safety is priority. Even in Illinois, summer days can be deceptively hot. We never leave the dog door open if it’s unsafe. Luna has her own insulated 32oz water bottle for when we’re on the run, and she always has shade and fresh water.
So, that means if we’re at home she’s got access to water wherever she goes.
Breakfast & Coffee, Hot or Iced
Back inside: Luna’s breakfast, supplements, and fresh water.
I make coffee. Hot or iced? Depends on the day. Coffee keeps me functional, and survival is a full-time job in summer too.
Outdoor Freedom & Yard Time
When the weather allows, the dog door is open, and Luna patrols her kingdom.
Activities include:
• Garden perimeter patrol
• Playing with her ChuckIt ball
• Tug games
• Short outdoor training sessions
• Sunbathing on the deck
BJ, the Yard Yeti, joins sometimes for maximum ball-throwing chaos. Luna loves him because no one throws or kicks a ball like he does. Indoor enrichment continues regardless of outdoor freedom. Brain games, food puzzles, scent work- she’s never left without stimulation.
Garden & Yard Work
Summer is prime garden time.
Tasks include:
• Watering plants
• Picking ripe produce
• Tidying up flower beds
• Removing stumps or debris from winter storms
• Planting or maintaining flowers for Bear’s memorial patch
The Yard Yeti handles much of the heavy lifting, but Luna supervises. Bear’s space blooms with flowers and love, a quiet acknowledgment that he’s still part of our lives.
Pest & Heat Safety
Summer brings its own hazards:
• Vet-approved flea and tick preventatives
• Paw, ear, and belly checks
• Avoiding heatstroke with timed outdoor activity and shaded rest
• Insulated water bottles for walks
Grooming & Coat Care
Even in warm weather, grooming continues:
• Indoor baths as needed for temperature regulation and skin health (oatmeal-and-honey shampoo)
• Brushing to remove loose fur
• Nail trims, tolerated begrudgingly, to protect feet, furniture, and blankets
• Wardrobe changes: lighter sweaters, t-shirts, bandanas for comfort and sun protection
Dinner, Frozen Treats, and Evening Stability
Luna’s last potty before dinner is around 5pm.
Dinner stays consistent:
• Lamb-based kibble with hip and joint support
• Vet-approved dog soup, balanced and healthy
• Warmed or served at room temperature depending on the day
Summer bonus: frozen dog yogurt treats. They help with temperature regulation and mental enrichment. I plan to share the recipe soon.
Final potty break happens later in the evening, like always.
But of course, if she ever needs them, we will get up in the middle of the night to supervise extra potty breaks. We would never make her “tough it out” until morning.
Care does not take a season off.
Closing the Café
This is summer here.
Not perfect. Not aesthetic. Not optimized for productivity.
Just safe play, comfort, care, and a little chaos.
Luna is still the same dog.
The love remains.
The choreography between body, environment, and need continues.
Other seasons tell different stories. Summer smells like soil, sunlight, and frozen treats.
If something here hit close to home, you’re not alone.
If you stayed anyway, thank you. You don’t have to earn your place here.
