Or: Why I Apparently Don’t Have an Off Button.
Content Note: This week’s takeover includes discussion of disability, chronic illness, medical alert service dogs, cancer treatment, heart rate changes, grief, and chronic pain.
Welcome to The Crippled Cryptid.
Disability, chronic illness, service dogs, and survival without the performance.
If you’re new here, hi.
I’m Luna Bean.
Medical alert service dog.
Certified Good Girl.
Full-time nervous system supervisor.
Mama’s body is very dramatic.
My job is to notice before it steals the spotlight.
I alert to migraines.
Seizures.
Heart rate spikes.
Muscle spasms.
And any vibes suspicious enough to deserve a second opinion.
I interrupt spirals.
I apply Deep Pressure Therapy like it’s a sacred ritual.
Because you know something? It is.
I’m learning to retrieve the things Mama drops when her hands decide they’re on vacation.
Some people call me a dog.
Some people call me medical equipment.
Mama just calls me family.
I consider myself a very important partner.
Maybe even a sidekick.
Mama says I have “Main Character Energy.”
Whatever the fluff that means.
Most days move slowly.
Sometimes they happen from Bed Jail™.
That’s okay.
I’m excellent at staying close and making sure Mama doesn’t drift too far away from herself.
Then there’s M&M.
Mama #2.
Professional belly-rub distributor.
Treat supplier.
The human responsible for my summer bandanas and winter sweaters.
She belongs to both of us.
Then there’s the Yard Yeti.
Mama’s little brother.
Still somehow the tallest creature in the house.
The Greatest Ball Thrower Ever Recorded™.
He gets the biggest waggies.
The biggest boings.
The loudest borks.
Every single time he walks through the front door yelling, “Lulus!”
And now…
Our pack is getting even bigger.
I have a Grandpaw now.
He’s excellent at throwing balls too.
But that isn’t even all.
Honestly?
I’m collecting humans with very useful talents.
This space is for chronic illness without shame.
Disability without performance.
Care without conditions.
(And yes… there will absolutely be fur.)
If you’ve been here before…
Welcome back.
If you’re new…
You’re safe here.
Welcome to the Lunatic Café.
Today’s special?
Friday Takeover.
☕ Sit. Stay. Hydrate.
Hi, hello!
Sit.
Stay.
Good human.
I’m proud of you.
Now go grab some water.
I’ll wait.
…
Good.
Now…
If you haven’t eaten today…
Go fix that too.
Coffee is not a meal.
I have checked approximately four million times.
It is still not a meal.
You may have coffee with breakfast.
You may have coffee after breakfast.
You may even have coffee with dessert.
But coffee by itself?
Absolutely not.
Mama tries this nonsense all the time.
I remain unconvinced.
🐾 Pack Updates
This week has been…
Busy.
Not scary busy.
Happy busy.
A few months ago, it felt like every trip out of the house involved doctors.
Now?
Sometimes we go to the pharmacy.
Sometimes the library.
Sometimes just because we can.
Sometimes because Mama remembered she needed one tiny thing from the store…
Which somehow turns into six tiny things.
We’ve also been seeing more family.
Grandpaw came over for Father’s Day with his dad and one of Mama’s stepbrothers.
Mama and Mama #2 made bouille and pineapple upside-down cake.
Everyone told stories.
Shared old photos.
Even though it rained…
There were still ball throws.
Which, if you ask me, is the correct response to almost any weather.
Healing doesn’t always look like getting better.
Sometimes it looks like having more reasons to leave the house.
I think Mama’s been smiling more lately.
I like that.
🚙 Adventure Time
Thursday started with Mama waking up at 4:00 in the morning to take the Yard Yeti to the Farmer’s Market.
Then she came home.
Took a nap.
Asked Mama #2 if she wanted to come back later.
Mama #2 rolled over, made sleepy human noises, and declined.
Mama grumbled.
I listened.
Eventually Mama stood up.
I quietly walked over…
Sat in front of my sunflower harness…
And gave her The Look™.
You know the one.
The one that says,
“You’re not seriously leaving without me… are you?”
She sighed.
Smiled.
Picked up my harness.
Adventure approved.
Mama rolled every single window down in The Great Pumpkin™.
Wind in my ears.
Sleep Token on the radio.
The smell of summer.
Perfection.
Mama says The Great Pumpkin™ is technically her Jeep.
I disagree.
I supervise navigation.
That makes it at least fifty percent mine.

🌻 Fashion Report
Naturally…
Our first stop was the bandana stand.
The same wonderful humans who made Bear’s bandanas.
They remembered us.
One of them told me I’d grown into such a beautiful girl.
Correct.
They helped Mama pick out…
🌼 A blue daisy bandana to match my collar.
🌻 A sunflower bandana to match my work vest.
🐾 A blue paw-print bandana for Fourth of July when Grandpaw comes over.
Current Fashion Rankings:
🌻 Sunflowers: 12/10.
🌼 Blue daisies: Elegant. Sophisticated.
🐾 Paw prints: Ready for patriotic ball throwing.
I looked fabulous.
As expected.
🍪 Breaking Barking News
Now…
Here’s something you humans didn’t know.
Earlier this week…
Mama and Mama #2 disappeared for what they called “one quick errand.”
Liars.
They came home smelling like Reese’s Barkery.
I know that smell.
They thought they were sneaky.
They were not.
Apparently, they had gone to surprise me.
I received: two whole pounds of cookie salad.
AND…
Perhaps most importantly…
🎾 A brand-new orange tennis ball.
Friends…
The betrayal of leaving me behind was forgiven immediately.
Sometimes forgiveness looks like zoomies.
❤️ A Job Doesn’t End When the Vest Comes Off
As we wandered around the Farmer’s Market…
Lots of people told Mama how pretty I am.
Accurate.
Several people said I was one of the best-behaved Australian Cattle Dogs they’d ever met.
Also, accurate.
Then we visited the Reach Rescue tent.
Mama and Mama #2 have been talking about maybe someday adding another dog to our pack.
Not yet.
Just someday.
I met several very nice doggies.
Parker Posey was especially sweet.
I hope she finds her forever family soon.
Every dog deserves humans who look at them the way Mama looks at me.
Then one of the volunteers asked Mama a question.
He asked whether I was really a service dog…
Or whether the vest was just so I could go places.
It’s a question working teams hear sometimes.
Mama answered kindly.
Then…
I noticed something.
Something didn’t feel right.
Not with Mama.
With him.
So, I walked over.
Laid across his feet.
And stayed there.
Mama calmly asked if he ever had problems with his heart beating too slowly or too quickly.
She explained that her own Apple Watch wasn’t alerting for her.
She wasn’t trying to diagnose anything.
Just checking in.
Because that’s what kindness looks like.
He told us he normally struggles with a low heart rate…
And that he’d had cancer treatment the day before.
So, I stayed.
Quietly.
For almost twenty minutes.
Mama always says alerts are information, not diagnoses.
Sometimes all I’m really saying is,
“Hey… maybe check in with yourself.”
While I stayed with him…
Mama sat on the ground visiting Parker Posey.
Another volunteer asked if they could photograph me working.
They asked first.
That matters.
Mama said yes.
And she started telling my story.
She laughed and said,
“Apparently she doesn’t have an off button.”
She’s right.
I don’t.
Because helping doesn’t feel like work.
It just feels like being me.
💜 Mama Note: One of the things I love most about Luna is that she never seems to understand the difference between my person and a person. If she thinks someone might need checking on, she’ll quietly do exactly that. It’s one of the many reasons I trust her so completely.
Some service dogs come from famous programs.
Some come from shelters.
Some come from rescue organizations.
Some start life in places nobody expected.
What matters isn’t where we began.
It’s whether we can safely and reliably do the work.
Two years ago…
I was just a little cattle dog from a rough neighborhood outside Chicago.
Now?
I’m exactly where I belong.
And I wouldn’t change a thing.
🌱 Mama vs. The Garden
You would think…
After all of that…
Mama would come home and rest.
You would be incorrect.
She ate real food.
Good cryptid.
Then she went outside on a video call with Mama #2 and Aunt Lise to show off the garden.
The weeds had…
Opinions.
Mama picked up a tiny, serrated garden shovel.
Started swinging it around like she was defending Middle-earth.
Honestly?
It was a little intimidating.
Results:
🥬 Four radishes harvested.
🫛 One sugar snap pea.
🍅 Tomatoes growing beautifully.
🥒 Cucumbers thriving.
Spiky weeds?
Absolutely devastated.
Scoreboard:
Mama: 1
Spiky Weeds: 0
After that I supervised recovery.
Bodies need food.
Bodies need rest.
Mama’s doctor says bodies need nourishment, not internet trends pretending to be miracles.
So around here…
We eat dinner.
Blue raspberry electrolytes are still allowed.
Those are delicious.
💜 Mama Note: People often tell me how calm Luna is in public. What they don’t see are the thousands of quiet moments at home that built that confidence. Public access starts in living rooms, backyards, parking lots, and patient repetition long before anyone ever sees a service dog in a store.
💤 Weekend Plans
This weekend I plan to:
🐾 Sit on Mama.
🐾 Perform generous amounts of Deep Pressure Therapy.
🐾 Encourage hydration.
🐾 Supervise ball throwing.
🐾 Prevent unnecessary overdoing.
(Results not guaranteed.)
If the weather behaves…
Maybe we’ll even visit the pool.
We’ll see.
I’ll be the one making executive decisions.
Mama tells people healing doesn’t always mean getting better.
Sometimes it means laughing more.
Going to the library.
Seeing family.
Making new friends.
Buying dog cookies.
Rolling every window down.
Throwing the ball one more time.
We still have hard days.
They just aren’t the only days anymore.
I think that’s worth celebrating.
Thanks for staying with us.
If something here felt familiar…
You’re not alone.
If today asked too much of you…
It’s okay to rest.
You don’t have to earn care.
You don’t have to prove pain.
You don’t have to be productive to be worthy.
I’ll be right here.
Watching Mama’s breathing.
Listening for the quiet shifts.
Ready to interrupt, ground, lean, or curl up whenever I’m needed.
If you’d ever like to spoil me, Mama made me an Amazon Wishlist.
No expectations.
Ever.
It’s simply there for people who enjoy sending love in chew toy form.
Until next Friday…
Stay hydrated.
Eat real food.
Tell your humans you love them.
And don’t let your pack turn into raisins.
Love,
Luna Bean 🐾
