The world got bigger while I was busy surviving it.

👻 Welcome to The Crippled Cryptid
Disability, chronic illness, service dogs, and survival without the performance.
If you’re new here, hi.
I’m Sky.
Professional cryptid.
Former unwilling amateur cyborg.
And I love getting to say that one now.
Occasional chronic illness and disability advocate.
Author. Bookworm. Keeper of two wildly loved dogs.
Medically complex enough to make my chart qualify as a jump scare.
I cope with sarcasm, snacks, and narrating my life like it’s a field report.
Sometimes there’s coffee.
Those are the best days.
Today?
Today’s survival kit includes iced coffee, green apple electrolytes, and enough determination to qualify as a personality trait.
Or maybe it’s a character flaw.
I don’t know.
You decide.
I’ve also been living almost exclusively off Coca-Cola because the migraine has decided to take the passenger seat and refuse to get out.
Sometimes, the only thing you can do is choose your battles.
Since I can’t find the pear flavor anymore, which remains a national tragedy, I’ve apparently decided this is my entire identity now.
Most days are lived inside a haunted meat suit with a questionable warranty and a long-standing feud with my nervous system.
And on Tuesdays…
We document it.
The appointments.
The adventures.
The spirals.
The “we left the house and somehow now we have a story” moments.
Sometimes that story is me sitting in a waiting room mentally writing an angry Yelp review about outdated magazines.
Sometimes it’s:
“We found a little restaurant afterward and the food permanently altered my personality.”
Sometimes…
it’s both.
I spend a lot of time in Bed Jail™.
But whenever I venture into the wild, I’m rarely alone.
There’s Luna.
Medical alert service dog.
Guardian.
Enforcer.
Professional Service Dingo™.
Public-access expert.
Emergency “Mom, we are sitting down RIGHT NOW“ decision-maker.
Then there’s M&M.
My Player Two.
My soft place to land.
Snack provider.
Voice of reason when I have absolutely none.
Which is… more often than I’d like to admit.
I’m a stubborn cryptid.
And, in spirit, usually somewhere inside the house, there’s the Yard Yeti.
Keeper of Home Base.
Guardian of the Wi-Fi.
Champion of saying:
“I support you… from this chair.”
And now there’s Blitzø.
Our eleven-week-old Great Dane × Anatolian Shepherd puppy with just a sprinkling of Kangal.
Also known as Binka.
Binky.
Blitzy.
And approximately four million other ridiculous nicknames.
Because that’s just who we are in this family.
This space is for chronic illness without inspiration porn.
Disability without apologies.
Life exactly as it happens.
The messy.
The mundane.
And the unexpectedly wonderful.
If you’ve been here before…
Welcome back.
If you’re new…
You’ll find your footing.
Welcome to the Cryptid Dispatch.
Field notes from the beautiful chaos.
📡 Cryptid Dispatch Incoming…
Some adventures are road trips.
Some are huge milestones.
And some are picking up a gaming chair for your little brother through a Free Group, heading to the grocery store, remembering that you can throw the ball for your dog, and spending an afternoon drinking iced coffee on the deck while the weather behaves itself…
…for approximately twenty-seven minutes.
From what I hear, Illinois has decided we’re all going to drown this week.
Part of me hopes the forecast is wrong.
Part of me knows it probably isn’t.
Because your resident ghoul and the weatherman have maintained a deeply personal feud for years.
He says one thing.
The weather does the opposite.
He keeps his job.
My body wants to throw a fit.
All is “right” with the world.
I’d also really appreciate not fighting 78–80-degree temperatures while trying to keep my garden alive.
And trying to keep myself alive.
Because apparently the giant black hornet-wasp-things have decided that my tomato plants are prime real estate.
They need to fuck off.
I hate them.
They hate me.
At this point, it’s basically the Hatfields versus the McCoys.
Except it’s my garden.
I built it.
I planted it.
I water it.
It’s mine.
They’re the intruders.
🌱 The Quiet Kind of Adventure
This week’s field notes aren’t about anything dramatic.
They’re about the quiet kind of freedom.
The kind that sneaks up on you wearing muddy paw prints and carrying grocery bags.
Today’s report includes life updates, quiet revelations, and something that’s changed my life in ways I never really expected.
This isn’t a rant.
Just… a “we left the house” post.
Something that still feels a little wild.
A little adventurous.
And if you’ve been around here for any amount of time… you already know we like adventures in this family.
Even the little ones.
It’s been another one of those weeks where, technically, not much has happened.
The migraine has been migraine-ing.
My neurologist has some thoughts about my medications, but that’s a Saturday Health Update problem.
And my allergist has some thoughts about Xolair, too.
That one deserves its own conversation, especially when we’re talking about a medication that has been a major part of keeping my body somewhat cooperative for a very long time.
So, we’re putting those things back in their proper file.
Saturday can have the medical chaos.
Tuesday gets to have the rest of my life.
🥩 Tonight’s Very Important Medical Treatment
Tonight, M&M and I are making brisket.
Because sometimes chronic illness looks like appointments and medications.
And sometimes it looks like standing in the kitchen thinking about how much brisket you can reasonably fit onto a baked potato.
The other night, we made steaks- because, sometimes your ghoul is a coupon goddess.
Tonight, we’re making brisket with loaded baked potatoes.
And not just any baked potatoes.
The Woodman’s potatoes.
The ones that are roughly the size of your head.
I genuinely want to know where they get these things.
Because they aren’t side dishes.
They are the meal.
Most people look at a baked potato and think:
Butter.
Maybe some chives.
Something on the side.
These potatoes?
You load one up with cheese, ham, butter, whatever else you want, and suddenly you’ve accidentally built dinner.
Tonight, I’ll be adding brisket.
Butter.
Cheese.
Probably enough toppings to make the structural integrity of the potato questionable.
And yes.
I am extremely excited about this.
There are worse ways to spend an evening.
🏡 The Den Is Changing
This Dispatch is arriving later than normal.
I haven’t been feeling well.
That’s the honest answer.
But I’ve also been planning.
A lot.
There are some big things happening around The Crippled Cryptid.
I’m working on a refacing of the blog.
Replanning the layout.
Keeping the same schedule while adding a few new pieces.
Making this little corner of the internet feel more like the place it has become.
And…
I have a pretty big announcement coming.
But that’s for Monday.
I know.
I’m terrible.
You’re going to have to wait.

🖤 From One Cryptid to Another
Seven months ago…
I was waiting.
Today…
I have an orange Jeep waiting in the driveway.
Muddy paw prints across my deck.
Books stacked beside my chair.
Family recipes on my table.
People I didn’t know I had.
A puppy who gets bigger every time I blink.
And a Service Dingo™ demanding that I throw one more tennis ball before dinner.
The body still hurts.
The appointments still exist.
The medical nonsense isn’t magically gone.
Surgery happened.
Recovery happened.
And somehow, through all of it, my world got bigger.
I think… that’s worth documenting.
Because if you’re running low on spoons… grab a couple from the snack table.
I keep extras there.
Drink some water.
Take your meds if it’s time.
Eat something.
Even if it’s only a few bites.
If life feels like a never-ending string of strange side quests… you’re in good company.
Some days are huge.
Some days are simply:
we survived the appointment.
we survived the body.
we survived Bed Jail™.
Every one of those victories counts.
Adventure doesn’t always look like crossing the country.
Sometimes it’s a county fair.
A root beer stand.
A family dinner.
A pup cup.
A dragon-hatted gnome riding shotgun in an orange Jeep.
A grocery store run.
A gaming chair.
A garden that is somehow still alive despite the weather and the hornet insurgency.
It all counts.
Because life is made of ordinary days.
And after everything…
ordinary has become extraordinary again.
Thank you for walking beside me while my world got bigger.
I hope, in some small way, this little corner of the internet helps yours feel a little bigger too.
Until next Tuesday…
