Sometimes the adventure is just making it out the front door. Sometimes it’s coffee, tired dogs, and waiting for your body to stop buffering.

📡 Cryptid Dispatch Incoming…
Welcome back to the field.
This is The Crippled Cryptid, reporting from somewhere between Home Base, the orange Jeep, Bed Jail™, and whatever location today’s adventure has dragged us into.
Because around here, “adventure” is a pretty flexible term.
Sometimes it’s a road trip.
Sometimes it’s a family dinner.
Sometimes it’s finding a new place to eat and immediately deciding it has altered your personality.
Sometimes it’s a trip to the grocery store that somehow produces three stories, two questionable purchases, and a dog who has decided the entire expedition was about her.
And sometimes…
We just got out of the house.
Which counts.
Luna is usually on field duty.
Professional Service Dingo™.
Chief Supervisor.
Keeper of the Important Human.
Binka is the junior cryptid, a title he has accepted with absolutely no humility.
M&M is Player Two, expedition partner, occasional voice of reason, and the person who will probably ask whether I remembered everything before we leave.
The Yard Yeti remains stationed somewhere around Home Base, presumably guarding the Wi-Fi and waiting for the day I become a famous author and finally have to make good on the Impala promise.
The field team is assembled.
The snacks are secured.
The Jeep is fueled.
The cryptid has been released into the wild.
So…
What happened this week?
That’s what we’re here to document.
The appointments.
The adventures.
The little wins.
The weird detours.
The unexpected moments that somehow become stories.
The things that make me laugh.
The things that make me think.
The things that remind me that even when life is complicated, there is still a life happening inside it.
These are the field notes.
Welcome to the Cryptid Dispatch.
Let’s see where we ended up this time.
☎️ The Great Phone Call Expedition
So far, there have been a lot of phone calls this week.
You know the kind.
The boring ones where you’re sitting there wondering:
“Will this shit ever end?”
And no, apparently, this is not going to stop the Great Rouladen Trial of 2026.
Absolutely not.
That is still happening.
It’s something I’ve had on my mind for a while now, and it is not something I’m going to give up on easily.
But finding a big amount of good-quality sandwich steaks is almost as easy as finding a decent-quality supply of spoons if you know the Spoon Theory…
And that’s without borrowing any from another day for some other reason.
Which brings me to something I think is one of the hardest parts of chronic illness.
🥄 When Your Body Says, “Try Again Later”
Especially after a big surgery, there’s this weird disconnect between what your brain thinks you should be able to do and what your body is actually willing to negotiate.
Your mind says:
Yes. We can do the thing.
The stitches are gone.
The wounds are closed.
From the outside, everything looks like it should be healed.
So surely, we’re good to go, right?
Except sometimes your body looks at you and says:
“Try again in 7–10 business days.”
And then again.
And again.
And again.
Until eventually you get the stupid error message:
Too many requests. Please try again later.
Goodbye.
Because honestly?
That feels a lot like where I’m at right now.
I’ve put in so many requests that my body just isn’t up for answering any of them.
And it is getting sick and tired of my shit.
To be fair…
I’m a little tired of it too.
I’m tired of the back and forth.
I’m tired of feeling like this.
I’m tired of it seeping into the other days of the week.
I know that chronic illness and disability can limit what you’re able to do.
That’s part of what the word disability means.
But sometimes the hardest part is knowing that something is genuinely beyond your current capacity while still desperately wanting to participate in your own life.
Because I still want to be a person, too.
I still want to make the rouladen.
I still want to go places.
I still want to collect stories.
I still want to have stupid little adventures.
I still want to sit around a table with people I love.
I still want to do things simply because they sound fun.
And sometimes my body says no.
That doesn’t mean I stop wanting the yes.
🍁 September Has Entered the Chat
But today is the first day of September.
So, if you ask me?
It’s fall now.
I know technically the start of fall is still a few weeks away.
That’s fine.
I have decided otherwise.
I’m going to soak it in as much as I can.
I have a true crime podcast playing.
I made maple pecan coffee with caramelized banana bread creamer.
It is still 86 degrees outside.
But in my mind?
Our maple tree is already orange.
I’m wearing an oversized Carhartt hoodie and my slipper socks.
The air is crisp.
The lighting is golden.
And I am simply vibing.
Reality may be wearing summer’s last pair of flip-flops.
I may be wearing a tank top so I don’t melt but that’s okay too.
My brain has already put out the Halloween decorations.
🍂 We are proceeding accordingly.
🐾 A Quiet Morning at Home Base
The dogs are taking it easy today.
Mostly because it rained earlier and I’m kind of forcing it.
Sometimes the best adventure available is staying home.
Blitz got us up at 5:30 this morning to let us know he had to go potty.
Which, honestly?
That’s a pretty excellent report from the junior cryptid.
He’s been getting really good about that.
So, we took the win, handled the potty mission, and went back to sleep for a little while.
No grand expedition.
No dramatic side quest.
Just a puppy doing exactly what he was supposed to do at an hour when absolutely nobody needed to be awake.
And then everybody went back to bed.
Honestly?
I’ll take it.
🏦 Tomorrow’s Maybe-Adventure
Tomorrow, we might try to go to a food bank we haven’t been to in almost a year.
And part of why we want to go back isn’t just because of the food.
We miss the people there.
We miss our friends.
We miss the familiar faces.
We miss the people we used to see there and wonder how they’ve been doing.
There’s something about returning to a place after a long time away and realizing that what you remember most isn’t necessarily what you received.
It’s who was there.
So maybe tomorrow we’ll go.
Maybe we’ll see some familiar faces.
Maybe we’ll catch up.
Maybe it’ll be a good day.
Can I promise what tomorrow will bring?
No.
Can I promise what any other day has in store for us?
Also no.
But that’s just how things are sometimes.
☕ Sometimes This Is the Adventure
Sometimes it’s sitting at the table with a cup of coffee, trying to relax for a while while your dogs wrestle on the back-room floor.
Sometimes it’s a phone call.
Sometimes it’s an appointment.
Sometimes it’s a grocery store.
Sometimes it’s a food bank.
Sometimes it’s a road trip.
Sometimes it’s a new restaurant that permanently alters your personality.
And sometimes…
It’s nothing more glamorous than getting through the morning.
You know what?
That’s okay, too.
👻 From One Cryptid to Another
And that’s this week’s field report.
Maybe it was a big adventure.
Maybe it was a tiny one.
Maybe it was nothing more glamorous than getting out of the house, accomplishing one thing, and making it home with enough energy left to collapse somewhere soft.
It still counts.
Because I’m learning that adventure doesn’t have to be enormous to be real.
Sometimes it’s a new restaurant.
A family dinner.
A trip down a road I’ve never taken before.
A ridiculous little roadside attraction.
A pup cup.
A muddy paw print on the deck.
A sunset from the driveway.
A story that begins with:
“So, we left the house…”
And somehow becomes an entire blog post.
That’s the kind of life I want to document.
Not the polished version.
Not the version where every day is productive and every outing is inspirational and everybody magically has enough spoons.
The actual version.
The messy.
The mundane.
The unexpectedly wonderful.
The days when my body cooperates.
The days when it absolutely does not.
The days when Luna is working.
The days when Binka is being a giant baby-shaped tornado.
The days when M&M is beside me.
The days when the Yard Yeti is back at Home Base, probably still waiting on his Impala.
All of it belongs in the record.
Because life isn’t only made of milestones.
It’s made of Tuesdays.
Ordinary days.
Little victories.
Side quests.
Unexpected detours.
Coffee at the kitchen table.
Puppy potty victories at 5:30 in the morning.
And after everything I’ve lived through…
I’ve learned not to underestimate an ordinary day.
So, if you’re reading this from your own little corner of the chaos:
Drink some water.
Eat something.
Rest if you need to.
Take the win, even if it looks ridiculously small from the outside.
And if you managed to get out there and collect a story this week?
Tell me about it.
The Cryptid Dispatch is always accepting field reports.
Until next Tuesday…
