📡 Cryptid Dispatch Incoming…

Welcome back to the field.

This is The Crippled Cryptid reporting from somewhere between Home Base, the orange Jeep, Bed Jail™, and whatever location today’s adventure has dragged us into.

Because around here, “adventure” is a pretty flexible term.

Sometimes it’s a road trip.

Sometimes it’s a family dinner.

Sometimes it’s finding a new place to eat and immediately deciding it has altered your personality.

Sometimes it’s a trip to the grocery store that somehow produces three stories, two questionable purchases, and a dog who has decided the entire expedition was about her.

And sometimes…

We just got out of the house.

Which counts.

This week’s field report comes to you courtesy of a Monday that involved errands, a lunch date, pet supplies, approximately two pounds of dog cookies, and enough bathing-related drama to last us a little while.

Let’s get into it.

🚙 Monday’s Little Expedition

Yesterday, M&M and I had a few things to accomplish, which meant getting ourselves together, loading up the orange Jeep, and heading out into the world.

Our first stop was PetSmart.

We needed flea shampoo for the kitten, because apparently our household has entered an entirely unwanted chapter of The Great Flea Nonsense. We also picked up some treats for him, a few cans of wet food, and, naturally, more litter.

Because litter doesn’t magically replenish itself, despite my continued disappointment in the universe.

After PetSmart, we decided that lunch was absolutely necessary.

And where did we end up?

Olive Garden.

Because sometimes, lunch dates with the person you love most in the world are exactly what you need.

Even when the weather is crappy.

Even when the sky is gray, the air is bleary, and everything looks like it’s threatening to rain.

Even when your body is already negotiating the terms and conditions of being outside.

There’s something to be said for getting out of the house, sitting across from your favorite person, enjoying a meal, and having a little time together that isn’t entirely devoted to household responsibilities.

No grand occasion required.

Just lunch.

Just us.

And honestly? Sometimes that’s enough.

From there, we made a quick Aldi run for a couple of groceries. Nothing particularly exciting, but the household doesn’t stock itself, and unfortunately, toilet paper is one of those things that becomes everyone’s problem when you forget to buy it.

We’ll get to the grocery situation again later.

🧼 The Great Cryptid Bathing Incident

Now, here’s where the day got considerably less glamorous.

We had some bathing to do.

And by some, I mean the entire household needed a little intervention.

It was Biscuits’ turn.

Our little quicksilver biscuit boy needed a proper bath, and we got him scrubbed up with the flea shampoo.

He was NOT particularly impressed with this development.

I felt absolutely terrible afterward. Once he was wet, he was MAOing up a storm, making it very clear that he had several complaints about the management of Purrgatory.

We dried him off, got him comfortable, and made sure he had treats waiting for him.

And, because apparently, we needed to sweeten the deal, he also got a brand-new can of wet food.

We picked up a new one at Reese’s Barkery: chicken and duck in goat milk gravy.

It’s from a brand we’re really enjoying, and I think we’ve found ourselves another favorite.

Was he happy about the bath?

Absolutely not.

Was he happy about the treats and dinner afterward?

Let’s just say negotiations improved considerably.

Then came the dogs.

Both got treats for handling their baths well at almost midnight on Sunday.

Which is especially appreciated considering that nobody volunteered for this particular adventure.

We’ve been dealing with a flea infestation, and I have had some rather colorful things to say about the people responsible for bringing bugs into my home.

And yes, I’ve cussed everyone and their cousin.

Because my four-legged family members did not ask for this, and they certainly don’t deserve to be uncomfortable because of someone else’s lack of consideration.

Luna, who is not exactly a fan of bath time, deserves particular recognition.

Blitzø was also a very good boy.

They both got through it, and I promised them something for being so cooperative.

A promise is a promise.

🍪 Two Pounds of Apology Cookies

Which brings us to Reese’s Barkery.

Remember when I said the dogs were promised cookies if they handled bath time well?

Well.

They did.

And I don’t believe in making promises to dogs that I don’t intend to keep.

So, two pounds of homemade dog cookies were the absolute least we could do.

Two.

Whole.

Pounds.

Because if you’ve ever had to convince a dog that bath time isn’t the end of civilization, you understand that compensation is important.

The dogs were good. The dogs were patient. The dogs put up with being scrubbed down when they would have much rather been doing literally anything else.

They deserved their cookies.

And frankly, after the week we’ve had, I think we all deserved a little something.

🛏️ When the Cryptids Become Bed People

Eventually, the errands were done.

The pets had been bathed.

The cookies had been acquired.

The groceries had been put away.

And the entire household collectively decided that we were finished participating in society for the day.

We became bed people.

Because the temperature changes lately have been absolutely unkind to everyone in this house.

It’s kicking my ass.

It’s kicking M&M’s ass.

And the dogs are dealing with their own seasonal nonsense as their winter coats start coming in.

Luna and Blitzø have both been particularly itchy, which is something we’re keeping an eye on.

Thankfully, Chewy has come through with reinforcements.

Our Native Pet supplement for seasonal allergies, itching, and gut health should be arriving sometime today, and we’ll be starting that as directed.

Hopefully, it gives the pups a little extra support as the seasons continue doing whatever the hell they’re doing.

Between the weather, the temperature fluctuations, and everything else, I think we’re all ready for a little consistency.

Or at least a day where nobody needs a bath.

That would be nice.

🗓️ Looking Ahead: A Quieter Week, Hopefully

As for me?

I’m hoping for a relatively low-key week.

I have food pantry volunteering Friday and Saturday now that BJ has officially wrapped up his farmer’s market season for the year.

I’m looking forward to getting back into that routine.

There will also be some grocery shopping happening, because if I don’t get out there and replenish a few household staples, we’re going to run out of important things.

Like toilet paper.

And nobody wants that particular brand of household emergency.

I’m hoping to keep the rest of the week fairly gentle. Get a few things accomplished, take care of the household, spend some time with my favorite people and creatures, and hopefully give my body a little room to breathe.

I’m not asking for a spectacular week.

I’m asking for a manageable one.

There’s a difference.

And right now, I’ll happily take manageable.

👻 From One Cryptid to Another

Yesterday wasn’t some enormous adventure.

We didn’t go anywhere particularly extraordinary.

There were no grand discoveries, no dramatic road trips, and no once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

We went shopping.

We had lunch.

We bought groceries.

We took care of our animals.

We bought two pounds of dog cookies.

And then we went to bed.

But I think there’s something worth remembering about days like these.

Sometimes, getting out of the house with the person you love most is the adventure.

Sometimes, taking care of the little lives that depend on you is the accomplishment.

Sometimes, the victory is getting through the errands, making it home, and having enough energy left to enjoy the evening.

And sometimes, the best part of a Monday is knowing that you didn’t have to do it alone.

I think we spend a lot of time waiting for the big moments.

The milestones.

The exciting announcements.

The things that feel important enough to write down.

But there’s a whole lot of life happening in between those moments.

In lunch dates.

In grocery store trips.

In new flavors of cat food.

In dogs who are brave enough to tolerate bath time.

In two pounds of cookies purchased because you love your animals and want them to know they’re appreciated.

In getting comfortable, finding your favorite person, and deciding that the rest of the world can wait until tomorrow.

And after everything I’ve lived through, I don’t think I’ll ever underestimate those little things.

Tomorrow will be better.

It doesn’t get a choice.

So, from our little corner of the cryptid household to yours:

Take the lunch date.

Buy the cookies.

Give your people a little extra love.

And if all you managed today was getting through the day?

That counts, too.

Until next Tuesday, fellow cryptids.
